After the OGL incident, have you wanted to try out different TTRPG systems besides D&D 5E? Or were you interested before that?
Well, look no further! Dungeon World is for you! It's a high fantasy game that uses the Powered by the Apocalypse system. Basically, there's a popular indie TTRPG game called "Apocalypse World" and it was so popular and successful that the creators made an system reference document (SRD) for this d6 system.
There's a YouTube channel called Tabletop Bro and he's a major supporter for Dungeon World. He explains the game so well. I suggest watching this video: https://youtu.be/yP1iPUaS22Y
I love the simplicity of the mechanics. It really helps bring the focus of the game to the story telling rather than the nitty gritty rules. The concept of "fronts" was something I was already using in my games, but this game really helped solidify it, and encouraged the "play to find out" gameplay.
The downside is the combat. It's not structured well enough, but that might be coming from someone who is fluent in 5E combat. The player weapons and abilities don't scale up with level, and don't do nearly enough damage to the enemies. The enemies have a set HP, but the difficulty is set to high from the beginning all the way to the end. Even if I have leveled up and gained many abilities, I still can't prevent myself from nearly dying at each enemy encounter.
I would really like to attempt to run one of the starter D&D modules, but in the Dungeon World system. I want to see if this system really translates well into D&D, and if my friends would enjoy the system.
